Marine Mechanics High Achievers

Mt. Ararat High School and Region 10 Technical School students, Troy Frey and Jesse Mitchell placed third in a state-wide competition for the Maine Marine Troubleshooting Contest.   Due to the high demand of quality marine technicians in the state of Maine, Marine Mechanics Institute (a division of Universal Technical Institute) and Portland Yacht Services teamed up to establish Maine’s first marine-specific skills competition.  The event was held during the 25th Annual Maine Boat Builders’ Show over St. Patrick’s weekend at Portland Yacht Services in Portland, ME.  Special guests included Commissioner Winglass and Director Snow of the Maine Dept. of Labor.  Commission Winglass spoke to the competitors about the need for young people entering the trades, especially in the state of Maine.  He encouraged the students to embrace the unique skill they have to pursue the career of the dreams.  In addition to trophies, the top 3 teams received tools from Snap-on Tools.  For more information on Marine Mechanics Institute or Portland Yacht Services, please visit or
